The last project I completed was a cotton baby afghan with a crocheted lace edge. Blankets just seem to suck the life out of my knitting. They take me forever to finish. I think it's the fact that it's the same boring stitches over and over again.
This is the second double knit blanket I've done and each time I'm improving. The instructions given by Carol Duvall on the HGTV website are kinda hard to follow. She wraps the yarn twice in those instructions, supposedly to make the double knit more fluffy and cuddly. I found the double wrapping to go very slow on the first blanket I made and it only lossened up the stitches. It didn't make the stiches ticker in anyway. So for this blanket, I just did a single wrap and it turned out fine.
Basically, double knit is working on one set of needles but it ends up being 2 ply. Start and end your rows with a garter stich border and double knit between. Here's my pattern:
Cast on 80 st.
Garter stich the first 10 rows to start your border
Next Row: knit 5 st. to begin garter stitch border, *(k, yo between stitches to purl, but slip the next st, yo between stitches to k,), * repeat till 5 st left, k last five stitches for garter stich border
2nd Row of pattern: k 5,*(k stitch slipped in previous row, yo between stitches to purl, but slip the next st, yo between st to k), * repeat till 5 st left, k last five stitches for garter stich border
Continue until you reach the length you want.
Finish with 10 rows of garter stitch and bind off.
After this I crocheted a pretty little lace edge, cause it just didn't seem finished and I made it for a little baby girl.
I had more yarn left over, so I made a cute little baby hat, too.
I can't wait to give these gifts to Baby Katherine. I started the blanket when she was still in the womb and I finished it when she was about 1 month old, I'll probably be able to see her when she's 2 months old.
